While there is a growing expectation that engagement should involve the whole community, engagement is not automatically accessible. In 2024, the Engagement Institute (formerly IAP2) launched a Position Paper on Inclusive and Accessible Engagement. In 2025, responding to growing demand for practical resources on inclusion, the Institute appointed Capire to develop a member-only toolkit to bring the Position Paper to life.
Drawing on Capire’s extensive experience working in the inclusion and accessibility sectors, and applying this knowledge across diverse projects, we worked with the Engagement Institute to create the Inclusive and Accessible Engagement Toolkit. Capire undertook desktop research, consulted with Engagement Institute members, and delivered targeted stakeholder engagement.
The resulting Toolkit is underpinned by evidence-based approaches such as universal design, trauma-informed practice and co-design methods. A practical and hands-on guide, it provides strategic guidance, useful tips and further resources. It is designed to support practitioners to embed inclusivity and accessibility at every stage of engagement.
The Toolkit covers the following areas:
In September 2025, Capire was re-engaged to deliver a professional development session on inclusive and accessible engagement for the Engagement Institute’s trainers. Facilitated online by Capire Associate Sarah Roberts, this interactive session explored practical strategies for embedding inclusivity and accessibility into engagement practice. It also featured a sneak peek of the Toolkit and case studies to illustrate various aspects of the training content.
