Capire designed an innovative partnership framework, engagement strategy and detailed implementation plan for the transformation of the Fitzroy Gasworks site.

Fitzroy Gasworks Engagement and Communications Framework

The former Fitzroy Gasworks is transforming into a vibrant new neighbourhood. Featuring sustainable homes, leading sports facilities, a secondary school, and public spaces, the site will set a benchmark for urban renewal, affordable and sustainable living in one of Melbourne’s most historic and established suburbs.

The project is led by Development Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government, in partnership with Department of Treasury and Finance, Victorian School Building Authority, and Sport and Recreation Victoria.

Capire designed an innovative partnership framework and engagement strategy for the project, establishing both a governance structure and multi-tiered implementation plan. The framework provided both a roadmap and protocols for how partners work together and how they should engage with local communities and stakeholders.

Capire also designed a detailed engagement implementation plan, which set a new standard for integrated community engagement across multi-partner projects. The engagement focused on site master planning and statutory development approval.

Community feedback was provided for the draft Development Plan via an online survey, pop-up information sessions, and two drop-in sessions. The community provided input on the school, sporting facilities, social housing, open space, community art, height and density, traffic, parking, and the heritage of the site.

The feedback identified will help inform the development, including the Wurun Campus senior high school which is now open.
