The City of Stirling in Western Australia was keen to increase its internal capacity to plan and deliver community engagement. Capire was appointed to deliver a tailored two-day training program.
Capire’s training program, which was tailored to the various roles across the City of Stirling, was designed to give people across all levels of the organisation a better understanding of community engagement and best-practice principles.
We covered topics such as the benefits of engagement to decision-makers and communities, the importance of inclusive engagement, common barriers to engagement, and how to overcome such barriers. Training sessions were highly participatory, with up to 25 people per class.
Capire used case studies, role play and games to maximise learning outcomes. Group discussions allowed staff to share innovative ideas and lessons learned from previous engagement projects.
The training program included drop-in sessions where staff and Councillors could discuss a current engagement challenge with Capire’s expert trainers. We also delivered a briefing with the Mayor to explain the training objectives and expected outcomes.
Capire’s community engagement training program built the confidence, capability and understanding of more than 100 Council staff. It also supported a more consistent and effective approach to community engagement across the organisation.
