Capire facilitated a workshop to gather feedback on IBAC’s pilot program to improve response times for complaints about police misconduct.

Focused Police Complaints Pilot

Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) worked on a pilot program to improve response times for complaints about police misconduct made by communities at a higher risk of experiencing police misconduct.

Capire was engaged to support the design and delivery of the community and stakeholder engagement for this project. The engagement objectives included building awareness and support for the program; understanding stakeholder views, expectations and concerns; encouraging reporting of suspected police misconduct; and building trust.

Approach
The focal point of this engagement was a workshop held in November 2023, which aimed to bridge the gap and build relationships between IBAC and Victoria’s diverse communities. Attendees included community leaders and advocates, representatives of cultural organisations, legal professionals and concerned citizens.

Capire facilitated the workshop using an Intercultural Framework, which focused on building relationships, fostering understanding, and acknowledging the unique perspectives of each person. Participants were asked three sets of questions, with responses summarised into themes, findings and recommendations.

Outcomes
By creating a safe space where participants felt confident to express their views, the workshop succeeded in fostering an honest and open dialogue that will feed into IBAC’s next steps.
