Tram Corridor Project Engagement Phase 1 and 2

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) engaged Capire to deliver a large-scale engagement program to inform plans for an upgraded safe and accessible tram network. The engagement program was delivered in two phases across three tram corridors: Route 86 along Gertrude and Smith Street in Fitzroy/Collingwood; Route 86 along High Street in Thornbury; and Route 82 along Droop Street in Footscray.

The first phase of engagement sought feedback from the community, businesses and key representative groups living, operating and visiting along the three tram corridors. Engagement activities included an online survey, information sessions, pop-up events, business door knocks and intercept surveys.

The broad engagement program reached more than 2,500 community members and approximately 550 businesses. Participants provided valuable information to help DTP develop design options for level-access tram stops and propose new tram stop locations for the three corridors.

During the second phase of engagement, DTP presented the design options for each tram stop and sought feedback via a survey, which received more than 2,000 responses. Capire analysed the data to reveal preferences for tram stop designs and locations, as well as data segmentation for key demographics, such as gender, disability and other needs that affect tram access.

Participants expressed positive sentiments regarding the project and the engagement. They also raised valuable concerns and insights regarding the accessibility of Melbourne’s tram network.
