The City of Greater Bendigo was looking to improve the way the organisation conducted its community engagement. Specifically, they wanted consistent approaches to the design and delivery of community engagement; champions within each directorate to help support other staff; and provide guidance on tools for the planning of each phase of the engagement cycle – from agreeing objectives, negotiables and non-negotiables through to monitoring and evaluation.
Council asked Capire delivered tailored training to their staff to improve organisational community engagement. First, to understand the specific training needs and learning aspirations of the officers, Capire hosted a ‘State of Play Workshop’. This gave Capire insight into what was working; what needed improvement; and the barriers to engagement (internal and external). Capire also ran a Leading Practice Forum for senior members of the Bendigo team to build awareness of the importance of engagement and forthcoming legislative changes in how and when to engage.
Capire delivered three training sessions focusing on planning for successful engagement and facilitation. The training has assisted in creating consistent approaches to the design and delivery of community engagement; developing champions within each directorate to help support other staff; and embedding IAP2 Core Values in engagement practice.
