Wallan Structure Plan
Wallan is the fastest growing town in Mitchell Shire, with an estimated 50,000 people moving to the town over the next 30 years. To guide this future development a structure plan was prepared which involved significant community and stakeholder engagement.
Capire designed a comprehensive three-stage engagement strategy to inform the development of the Wallan Structure Plan. Stage one explored the key issues facing Wallan, investigating how the community would like the town to look and feel in the future; stage two sought to test the ideas developed in stage one; and feedback on the draft Wallan Structure Plan was invited during stage three.
The engagement used a project website to provide information as well as a moderated forum and surveys. The Capire team designed community drop-in sessions and focus groups to seek feedback on the preliminary vision and discuss ideas in detail. A Community Liaison Group was established to advise the project team and act as ‘community champions’ – building understanding in the wider community about the project.
In March 2015, the Wallan Structure Plan was unanimously endorsed at Council. This paves the way to a future that will see a very different Wallan, but also a considered future with input from everyone.
