Aquazone Youth and Community Forums

Client, Warnnambool City Council

Aquazone is the major indoor community aquatic and leisure facility in South West Victoria. Managed and operated by Warrnambool City Council, it is a vital community facility providing affordable access to local people and visitors. The future of Aquazone needs to be planned carefully and it is important to include the community in these discussions to ensure they include all perspectives.

Since the centre was first opened in 2002, a number of changes have occurred affecting the operation of the centre and at times the facility has struggled to meet demand. To respond to these issues Warrnambool City Council developed a strategy to guide future operations and the redevelopment of the centre. As part of the strategy development, Council prepared four possible options for the future development of Aquazone.

Capire delivered an engagement process focusing on these four options for future use. We facilitated two large forums – one with young people and the other with the wider Warrnambool community. The forums were a rich opportunity to explore community attitudes, ideas and preferences towards the future redevelopment and operation of Aquazone.

This dialogue ensured that facility planning reflects the needs and aspirations of current and future generations in Warrnambool and the region.
